Sustainable Development - A New Challenge for the Police
Authors/Editors: Dr. B.H. Ruessink and Prof. Durwood Zaelke
To evaluate the role of police in supporting environment protection efforts, Dr. Henk Ruessink and Professor Durwood Zaelke wrote the article Sustainable development - A New Challenge for the Police. This article explores what sustainability means for the function and tasks of the police and the types of responses necessary to encourage compliance with environmental requirements.
As a large public service, police forces are partly responsible for the enforcement of legislation and regulations that are in place for the protection of sustainable values. If the police are to perform these tasks properly, the subject of sustainable development is to be considered in its full scope in the prioritization and programming of their activities. This article thoughtfully examines sustainable development and its implications for law enforcement in general, and the police and their organizations in particular, and presents recommendations for building capacity.
