Alternative Farming Systems Information Center

One of several information centers at the National Agricultural Library, AFSIC specializes in accessing and identifying information related to alternative agricultural ventures and crops along with alternative cropping systems. For instance, there are resources on organic agriculture, sustainable agriculture and community-supported agriculture.

Appropriate Technology Transfer for Rural Areas

A sustainable farming information center managed by the National Center for Appropriate Technology. Provides technical information to farmers and extension agents thinking about sustainable farming practices.

American Community Gardening Association

Web site has links to US community garden programs. Information on subscribing to the national Community Gardening listserv. For 2001, ACGA’s Community Building Program offers Leadership Development workshops and a Growing Communities manual

American Herbal Products Association (AHPA)

Trade association for producers and manufacturers of medicinal herb products and nutraceuticals (functional foods). Sponsors symposia; see Web site for list of publications.

American Livestock Breeds Conservancy (ALBC)

Organization dedicated to conserving heritage livestock breeds since 1977. Publishes newsletter ALBC News and books. (Formerly American Minor Breeds Conservancy.)

National Campaign for Sustainable Agriculture

Nationwide coalition of farmers, environmentalists and consumer advocates focusing on federal policies, land grant university priorities, and marketing systems. Formed in 1992. Affiliated with state and regional sustainable agriculture working groups (SAWGs).

The Research Institute of Organic Agriculture (FiBL) FiBL is a private foundation by organic farmers, scientists, politicians and representatives of industry near Basel (Switzerland) dedicated to establishing practice oriented agronomic and economic research, and of making new findings available to the organic farmers.
Organic Farming Research Association The Organic Farming Research Foundation is a non-profit foundation founded to sponsor research related to organic farming practices, to disseminate research results to organic farmers and to growers interested in adopting organic production systems, to educate the public and decision-makers about organic farming issues.

Committee for Sustainable Farm Publishing

Maintains Sustainable Farming Connection Website with links to sustainable grassroots organizations. On-line publisher of articles and farm success stories. (Note: no updates since August 2000.)

Independent Organic Inspectors Association (IOIA)

Non-profit association provides intensive training and credentials for independent inspectors working in certified organic farming. Publishes IOIA Newsletter.

The Rodale Institute

The Rodale Institute works worldwide to achieve a regenerative food system that renews the earth. Their activities include research, training, workshops, and information dissemination. See on-line bookstore.

The Land Institute The Land Insitute, a sustainable agricultre research institute in Kansas, offers internship programs and research opportunities.

Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy (IATP)

Sponsors daily news bulletins and electronic conferences on trade and sustainable agriculture. Mission is to create environmentally and economically sustainable communities and regions through a sound agriculture and trade policy

International Ecological Agriculture Trade Association

Organized in 1991 to promote and encourage the use of ecologically sound agriculture worldwide. Members include manufacturers of ecologically oriented products, technology developers and writers, consultants, producers, and other interested parties. Publishes yearly catalog.

Organic Trade Association (formerly OFPANA)

Publishes The Organic Report, The Organic Pages Online, and the American Organic Standards. Provides information and resources about the organic industry in North America.
