International Agreements and Treaties
Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) A global treaty for the protection of human health and the environment from Persistent Organic Pollutants. Pops are chemicals that stay in the environment for long periods, are widely dispersed geographically, accumulate in the fatty tissue of organisms and are toxic to humans and none human animals.
Convention on Long-Range Transboundary Air Pollution (LRTAP) - Aarhus Protocol on Persistent Organic Pollutants (Pops) Facilitated by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), the Aarhus Protocol on Persistent Organic Pollutants focuses on limiting the discharge and emissions of 16 POPs.

The Rotterdam Convention on the Prior Informed Consent (PIC)

A global effort allowing importing countries to exclude pesticides and chemicals they cannot safely manage. When chemical trading does take place, PIC will require labeling for products with potential health and environmental risks.
Globally Harmonized System (GHS) An effort to harmonize global classifications of chemical hazards and communicating these hazards by labeling and safety data sheets.
"Environmentally Sound Management Of Toxic Chemicals" (Agenda 21 Chapter 19) Chapter 19 of Agenda 21 outlines programs for the classification, control, and risk assessment of toxic chemicals.

International and Nongovernmental Organizations
Center for International Environmental Law (CIEL): Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) Program
  CIEL works with the public interest community to attain a strong, effective and equitable global agreement to eliminate Pops Now that the Stockholm Convention has been adopted, the focus of CIEL's work is shifting toward ratification of the treaty and implementation of its obligations, as well as the continued development of treaty mechanisms relating to listing of new chemicals, trade in listed chemicals, and compliance.

Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR)

  CGIAR is an international organization that aims to contribute to food security and poverty eradication in developing countries through research, partnerships, capacity building, and policy support, promoting sustainable agricultural development based on the environmentally sound management of natural resources.
European Commission (EC): Plant Health / Pesticide Safety
  European Commission's Web page for plant health and pesticide safety.
Intergovernmental Forum on Chemical Safety (IFCS)
  A forum for cooperation among governments, intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations for the promotion of chemical risk assessment and the environmentally sound management of chemicals.
NAFTA Technical Working Group on Pesticides
  The Pesticides TWG is to develop a coordinated pesticides regulatory framework among NAFTA partners to address trade irritants, build national regulatory/scientific capacity, share the review burden, and coordinate scientific and regulatory decisions on pesticides. The North American Initiative Milestone Report (1.45MB, PDF) was published in 2001.
North American Commission on Environmental Cooperation (CEC)
  Established to address regional environmental concerns, help prevent potential trade and environmental conflicts, and to promote the effective enforcement of environmental law. This agreement compliments the environmental provision of the North America Free Trade Agreement.
