Travel Information
Visas & Embassies
Citizens
from U.S., Canada, Europe and many Latin American countries may enter with
their passport without need to obtain a visa. When traveling with a passport
you are entitled to a 90-day stay. It
is always recommended to check with the Costa Rican embassy in the capital
of your country nearest you for requirements prior to travel for information
on visa requirements. All participants are responsible for obtaining any required Visas themselves.
Transportation
The Real
Inter-Continental San Jose is located 15 miles from Juan Santamaria International
Airport in San Jose. INECE will provide bus transportation from the airport
to the hotel for participants arriving on Saturday and Sunday. A cab will
cost $12 per person. Additionally, the Juan Santamaria International Airport
charges a USD $17 departure tax.
Currency
Costa Rican unit
of currency is the Colón (41,00).
It is recommended that you exchange your currency in Costa Rica
because of the constant change in the value of Costa Rican currency, but be
aware that there are no official money-changing places in the country and the
public banks are notoriously slow.
Using a private bank in that case would be wise. Major credit cards (Visa, MasterCard,
American Express) are accepted at most airlines, hotels and restaurants. There may be a service charge of 3 to 7 %
for using credit cards.
Time
Costa Rica is 6 hours behind GMT
(Greenwich Mean Time).
Tipping
Most restaurants will include a 10% service charge at the bill. Taxi drivers generally do not receive a tip. If you are satisfied with the service you receive, hotel maids, tour guides and drivers would appreciate a tip.
All outlets are 110V/60Hz. If you use a hair dryer, electric shaver, or
battery operated charger for a computer, you may need to bring an adapter.
Weather
San José is located 1150 meters above sea level and has a moderate temperature throughout the year. It may go as low as 59ºF/15ºC at nighttime, and up to 78ºF/25ºC during the day.
